Meet Alisa Haughton a New York based photographer with a Communications and Emerging Technology degree. Photography has been her outlet for 5 years now and is intent on getting better at her craft. Although her primary tool of choice is her DSLR over the years she has enjoyed using her mobile phone to capture photos as well. We sat down with her for a brief interview to learn more about what inspires her and where she plans to take her career.

theFeed: What got you interested in photography?

I remember it was a beautiful spring day at Nyack College Rockland College and I couldn’t help but stare at all the beautiful scenery that I was surrounded by. At the time, I had a little Sony Digital camera and just began taking pictures of flowers and trees and birds. I was walking with a friend that day and she said “You should take a photography class!” I ended up taking it the following spring with an AMAZING photography instructor Andres Valenzuela. I received my very first DSLR and the rest is history.

theFeed: Tell us about your tools, what type of camera do you use?

I started out with a Nikon D3000 (which I still have), Now I am currently using a Nikon D7100 body and 17-55mm Lens.

theFeed: What is your favorite piece of photography equipment?

As far as equipment, my camera and lens is all I have. But when I do collab shoots with my cousin, I do enjoy using speed flash and lighting equipment. It’s all in preparation for when I get my own.

theFeed: What type of photography do you like the most?

I love taking candid shots of people, I truly believe those are the best. Also I enjoy urban fashion and engagement shoots.

theFeed: What do you enjoy most about photography?

The fact that you can capture a moment and keep it forever, is amazing. I enjoy when people are satisfied with my work, it warms my heart.

theFeed: People think that to be a serious photographer you must have a DSLR, do you agree with this?

I guess it depends, because there are many people with DSLR’s that do horrible work. But having a DSLR is important because most people want quality work! Photography is so much more than taking a picture, anyone can take a “good” picture but it’s all about the quality of the photo. There is so many cool and creative things you can do with a DSLR, a lot that you would not be able to achieve with a camera phone or a Sony digital camera.

theFeed: Do you do any post production work on your photographs? If so what tools do you use?

Yes, sometimes if needed, I strive to take the best pictures so I don’t have to do to much post production work. When I do, it’s usually the Aperture Program for Mac, Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop.

theFeed: You do a lot of mobile photography, what’s the biggest difference in taking pictures with your phone as opposed to your DLSR?

I absolutely love mobile photography, some of the greatest shots I have taken was with a mobile phone.  Mobile Photography for me, is easy access to taking a photograph, sometimes you will not always have your heavy DSLR around to capture a frame, so why not use what you do have. Before I got my DSLR, my Sony digital camera and my phone were my tools. My photography professor always said that “Having an expensive camera doesn’t automatically make you a photographer.” Once again it is about quality, your mobile phone most likely will not pick up every detail of a frame as opposed to a DSLR camera/lens.

theFeed: Do you believe mobile phones would ever replace the photographers DSLR in the professional environment?

The way that technology is going right now, I would have to say yes. Mobile phone cameras are getting better and better but for me personally, I would probably still be using my DSLR because as stated before, there is something about a DSLR camera and there are so many different quality lens. I’m sure as the phones get better, so will the DSLR and its lenses.

theFeed: Most photographers I know hate being in front of the camera. Do you feel the same?

I sure do feel the same! I’m quick to say “Let me take the picture” Plus, I am more of a selfie person anyways, because sometimes only I know the look that I am going for.

theFeed: What has been your favorite shoot so far?

Too many, but I guess I would go with a photoshoot I recently did of a beautiful newly-wed couple in Brooklyn. I love seeing a couple that compliments each other and when you can tell that there are in love.  Love is beautiful and it’s always a pleasure to capture it.

theFeed: What is your ultimate goal in regards to your Photography?

My goal right now is to just keep getting better and better creatively. But to ultimately do private celebrity events and go to Africa to capture the beauty of the land and it’s people.

theFeed: Tell us something most people don’t know about you. Whats your favorite movie?

My favorite movie is The Lion King. The Lord made that movie.

theFeed: Favorite music artist?

I have so many, but I absolutely adore Cece Winans & Bob Marley.

theFeed: Love or Money?

God is Love. So Love over everything.

theFeed: Thanks for your time

You’re welcome!
