Four things I learned about being a grandmother

As a child, I grew up in the home with my grandmother. She was a physically and mentally strong woman and I enjoyed her company. When I got married and had children of my own, I learned how difficult it was to be a mother. I couldn’t wait until I had grandchildren of my own to spoil. So when my kids started having kids, I was shocked to learn that it wasn’t all sugar and spice. The adventure has begun. Here are the four things I learned about being a grandmother:

I would need to plant a money tree. Immediately.
My grandchildren feel that when mom and dad say no, grandma will shake that money tree and out would come the money they need for that Xbox game, or pizza they are craving. If this keeps up, I’ll need a money forest, full of trees.

The CIA has nothing on me!
My grandchildren look to me for protection from the wrath of their parents. I have to admit that I find myself begging for pardon on their behalf many times. Sometimes it helps, but most times I get that look that says “ please stay out of it!”

I would become an avid art collector
They are constantly bringing me drawings and I feel badly throwing them out, so I end up stacking them up in my house. My fridge can compete with any wall in the MET (but I may be biased)

I am still learning
As much as I felt I knew, after raising four children, I realized that there is still so much to learn. Knowing when to give advice to my children, and when to stay out of it has been the hardest lesson.. But also, learning about things like Minecraft, Star Wars and Frozen have also come in handy.

I have to admit, though, I have no regrets, and would change not one thing about my life as a grandparent. The joy that these children bring to my life is unspeakable. And bonus, when I get tired, I can send the home to their parents.
