The Hair Product Junkie

Whats in this story

The term “Product Junkie” has been adapted from the natural hair world for some time now. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, in the natural hair world it is described as someone who owns a ton of hair products or is addicted to constantly buying product after product. You find yourself walking down the hair aisle at your favorite store looking at all the fancy bottles thinking…”It’s buy one, get one half off” or “I saw this on YouTube” and “My hair crush uses this!” or “Maybe even Trying it out can’t hurt, right ?“

Let’s be honest, no one wants to be deemed a “Product Junkie” but, after a while you find yourself sifting through products and finding that you own countless shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and moisturizers. You can’t help but think, does it really take all of this to care for my hair? What ever happened to the days of juices and berries? I’m kidding but, really caring for our hair shouldn’t be this complicated. The days of being a “Product Junkie” are over! It’s time to adapt a simple regimen, just shampoo, deep conditioner, and moisturizer. You can even throw in a regular conditioner for co-washing (if you’re into that kind of thing).

  • Clarifier– Invest in a great shampoo. Be sure that when you are choosing your shampoo that it is made for your hair type. Don’t go off of trends, find what may work best for you by reading the label and INGREDIENTS! If you know your hair has a hard time maintaining moisture, don’t get a shampoo for oily hair. Makes sense right?
  • Conditioner/Deep conditioner– Both types of conditioners are used for two different purposes. Although they are both conditioners, one (deep conditioner) is mainly used when your hair desperately needs revitalizing. Regular conditioners are great for those of you who like to co-wash. A simple inexpensive conditioner works great for co-washing.
  • Moisturizer – I have learned that the term moisturizer doesn’t mean to find a specific product that is strictly a moisturizer. It means to find a product that can lock in the moisture of your hair. This can be a wide range of things like oils, leave-in conditioners, actual moisturizers, or a DIY concoction that can be found on Pinterest. The main objective is finding something that can seal in moisture to promote healthy hair growth.

We have to think of our hair as a plant; it doesn’t take much for it to grow, but we also have to be mindful of how we care for it. So, go through your products, find your holy grails, and stick with them. Donate the products you don’t use to someone you think may benefit from using them. Let’s embark on a new era! The era of uncluttering our product filled lives, remembering that it doesn’t take much for our hair to grow.
