What do we want? Apps. When do we want them? All the time. Why? Because growing up with the Internet just made us different.
Generations used to be based solely on birthdate and age, now it’s all about that technology. Did you save up your allowance for cassette tapes in your youth or spend twenty minutes coming up with a cool AIM away status? Be careful, because your response will be a dead generational give-away. Every year technology is adopted more quickly, partly due to smartphone apps that help make our lives more efficient and provide entertainment. Of course, it’s no surprise that Millennials are the queens and kings of apps. We value our time, money, authenticity and have a need for stimulation. New apps are created on a daily basis, but I wanted to share four trending apps that every Millennial needs and why. As a Millennial myself, some of the “whys” may be weird, but stick with me.
First up, we have Kitchen Stories. When you download this app for the first time you’ll go through the following three phases. 1. Swear for a while because the features are incredible. 2. Question why it’s taken you so long to find this kind of app. 3. Spend two hours on the app, resulting in 20 new cookbooks created, a five-page grocery list and putting some serious consideration towards quitting your job and signing up for culinary school. The app has tons of recipes with step by step instructions in photo and video form. If you love the Tasty videos on Facebook, this will be right up your alley. Millennials almost definitely won’t live up to our parents’ generation in the cooking department – but this app will help. I now have hope that one day I can make a meatloaf as immaculate as my Mother’s.
Next up, we have Tab. Every Millennial that went to college will wish that this app was around for Thirsty Thursdays back in the day. When you close out your tab at the bar, you simply take a picture of the receipt with your phone. The program takes note of all of the prices, items, taxes and tip. You and your friends only have to click on the items that belong to you, respectively, and the tax and tip are calculated proportionally. It also integrates with Venmo and other payment apps so you can easily square up with your friends. Since we’re a generation that values our time, it saves someone from having to hold onto a receipt, calculate what everyone owes later, and then send out texts to tell friends to pay up.
Now that we’re eating well, and drinking efficiently, it’s time to post a cool, hip (but not too hipster), authentic picture on Instagram with the magic of Snapseed. I knew I needed this app in my life when the guys I went to high school with were producing Time Magazine cover worthy photos. The in-app editing tools in Instagram weren’t going to cut it. This app is similar to many photo editing applications out there, such as VSCO and FaceTune, but it has more tools and filters, some of which I’ve never even seen before. Plus, it has a neat Healing tool that lets you edit out any obnoxious people that photobomb your pictures. Apps like Instagram and Snapseed let you document your life – but with your own artistic flair and authenticity, something that our generation cares deeply about. If you set every photo’s Saturation to something over 50 with a Warmth over 25, so what. It’s all about having your own style (but consider watching your filter finger).
The last app that you should consider downloading, partially because most of the people you know are already using it, is Poshmark. Millennials love a good purge, spring cleaning, mindful decluttering or what have you. This app allows you to buy discounted clothes and sell your own stuff. Snap and upload pictures of your items. When you make a sale, the app provides you with a free shipping label, so all you have to do is drop your packages off at the post office. The company does take a portion of the sale depending on how much the item sold for. Anything you don’t sell, you can drop off at your local Goodwill.
As a technology driven generation, we have a lot of say in what apps get created as we’re the main population to please. These apps don’t even scratch the surface of all that’s out there to make our lives more convenient and efficient, so stay tuned for more Trending Apps. Who knows, maybe one will claim a spot on your coveted home screen. Keep downloading, my friends.
