Saheed Vassell was fatally shot by police in Brooklyn, New York on Wednesday. Police claimed the man was pointing a metal pipe at officers when he was gunned down. Police say reports had come in that a man was aiming a gun at pedestrians. After the officers arrived, Vassell took a gun-holding stance with the pipe, aiming it at the officers and pedestrians. The officers thought it was a weapon and opened fire on the man, firing ten shots. Vassell later died at the hospital.
This incident is just one, in a slew of shootings of unarmed black men by police in recent months, that have sparked street protests across the country. The New York State Attorney General is investigating the shooting. About a thousand people came out in protest against the shooting.
