Thousands of Under-paid Public School Teachers Strike in Oklahoma

Whats in this story

In Oklahoma today, thousands of public school teachers went on strike. They came from more than 200 schools to protest terrible working conditions, and low pay. Classes were cancelled all over the state today because of the walkout.

Thousands of teachers spoke out about having to work second and third jobs just to be able to provide for their families. Teachers have been purchasing student books, not provided by their board of education, and most severely outdated. Most teachers end up moving to other states, because of higher pay. A study by the University of Oklahoma claims that teacher’s average pay in Oklahoma is $19,000 a year. Students also participated in the march, coming out in droves in support of their teachers. They are calling on Legislators to make changes quickly, for not only the benefit of teachers, but of students as well.
