In a recent twitter attack, President Trump has accused Amazon of causing loss to the United States Postal Service. This is not the first time Trump has attacked Amazon, blaming the company for having a terrible effect on the U.S. economy. Trump is now claiming that Amazon is not paying enough state and local taxes. Amazon does not collect state sales tax, if the item is purchased from third party sellers. But it does get sales tax in the states that require it.
Amazon has not responded directly to Trump’s claims on Twitter, but the company’s shares dipped amid the President’s accusations, most fearing change in regulations. Although the Post Office is losing money, it doesn’t seem to be because of Amazon. Most of the USPS ‘s loss seems to come from lower mail volume, but package delivery is up. It remains to be seen if Trump will demand stricter tax laws for Amazon.
