Hair Coloring on a Budget

Whats in this story

Colored or dyed hair has become extremely fashionable in recent years, no longer the preserve of those trying to cover their greys! Thankfully, advances in home colorants have made it so much easier and more affordable for almost anyone to change or brighten their locks at home, at their own convenience.

The array of brands and types of hair colorants on the market can be overwhelming even for those with dying experience, so for a newbie, it is altogether confusing. If you have never colored your hair before, it is best to go for a non-permanent or semi-permanent dye, the former lasting 6-8 washes, the latter usually up to 24 washes. These dyes are also comparatively inexpensive even for the top brands available. For true novices, non-permanent mousse colorants are the easiest to apply and wash out easily if you do change your mind. They can also help to give you an idea of what a more permanent color could look like. These types of dyes are also excellent for reducing the appearance of root regrowth.

The appearance of roots is a particular problem for colored hair and there are a number of options available to help with this, for use between color applications. Semi-permanent dyes, as previously mentioned, can be used and some brands offer specific kits for dealing with this issue. Powdered formulations can also be applied as a short term solution and if you are on a very tight budget consider using a matching shade of eye shadow, eyeliner or mascara.

If you do not want to color your hair yourself but cannot afford a standard salon, look for beauty schools in your area, as these are often on the lookout for models to practice on. As such, you can often get a haircut and color for free or at a very low price. Some salons also offer this service when they have trainees working for them.

A word of caution – if you are looking to bleach your hair, it is advisable to have someone experienced to help you, or you may do lasting and significant damage to your hair and scalp. And with any colorant be sure to carry out an allergy test before application.
