DIY with Irene: Plush Pillows for Mother’s Day

Whats in this story

Gift giving isn’t always a piece of cake, but who would turn down a piece of cake – am I right?

Well, I guess I know one person who doesn’t like cake…my mom. She is the type of woman who knows her desserts and will not settle for anything less than her favorites.

You’ve got to love a woman who knows what she likes, but it certainly doesn’t make gift giving easy. I learned  as a child,  I needed to make her gifts: something from the heart, with tons of glitter! (she never really loved that part, but you take what you get.)

So this year for Mother’s Day, I decided to bring back old traditions with some of my newer talents, minus the glitter this time. I had always admired touch, so naturally, felt fabric was a win with me. I discovered felt pillows while scrolling through Pinterest one day and fell in love with how cute these little guys were! I ran to the craft store and tried to recreate some of these mini pillows on my own. So here I am, a few days before Mother’s Day – struggling to decide on what to buy for my lovely Mother and I couldn’t help but think of something simple yet completely adorable.

What you’ll need:
Felt
Cotton Balls
Sewing Needle
Beads/Flowers
Lace (or sparkely) Trim
Sissors
Embroidery Floss
Dried Roses (optional)

Step 1: Take your felt and cut it into any shape you’d like. I learned how to make these by doing simple shapes like a heart. You can make them any size you’d like as well. I made this one about 5×5, but making them bigger may make your first pillow a bit easier.

Step 2: Take the piece that will be in front and create your canvas! Place beads, flowers, trim, anything you’d like! Arrange the pieces until your pillow looks just right.

Step 3: Sew! If you don’t already know how to sew, this may seem a little intimidating. Trust me, it’s easy! Grab your needle and your thread and simply sew the pieces onto the felt.

Step 4: Sew the two pieces of felt together. Now, you’re really going to start seeing the pillow come together.

Step 5: When you’re a little over halfway through sewing the pieces together, stuff some cotton and rose petals in there! I used dried rose petals that I had lying around the house to make the pillows a little scented. You can buy patchouli or other dried flowers at any flower shop! Start stuffing the pillow with some cotton, then some roses, then some more cotton and that’s all!

Step 6: Continue sewing until you’ve completed the shape. You can add a loop using some trim so you can hang the pillow on a door knob or on the wall. If not, you can skip the loop and leave it as is. You’re done!

These sweet and scented hearts make a perfect little reminder to your momma that she is the number one lady in your life. Fill it with her favorite scents, use her favorite colors – you can do anything to personalize these babies! Once you make one of these, you’re going to want to make more! They’re a great addition to any workspace, rearview mirror, door knob, you name it. Moms will definitely feel the love put into one of these pillows.
